    If you a parent, then you will know from experience that your children will - at some time or another - pester you to get a pet.

    When they are young, this might mean that they want a cuddly, fluffy type of pet such as a puppy, a kitten, a rabbit, or guinea pig. Or maybe they have their little hearts set on something simpler to keep - such as a goldfish, hamster, stick insect or caterpillar!

    Most parents end up reaching some sort of compromise so that the chosen pet satisfies the child’s needs but does not mean that they have many years of looking after an expensive animal.

    All of this changes though when your child becomes a teenager.

    My 16-year-old grandson, Jason, is typical. He had kept guinea pigs when he was younger. He built hutches for them in our garden shed and they used to run around the garden squeaking wildly and keeping the lawn trimmed by eating the grass.

    But as soon as my grandson entered those teenage years, he decided that he wanted something a little bit different and more exotic. And that is when he got Franky the ferret!

    Now, until Franky arrived on the scene, I’d always viewed ferrets as being rather smelly creatures that were rather aggressive and certain to bite you. But Jason has shown me how wrong my views are.

    He spent a lot of time reading up all he could about taking care of a ferret and how to ensure that Franky made a good pet. Ferrets are quite intelligent creatures and soon learn how to use a litter tray (like a cat) so that they can be kept indoors. They can also be taught not to bite and love playing with toys.

    When asked what’s the single most important thing they can do for their business, most people will give any of a number of different answers. Most will be very important, but in my opinion, nothing is more critical than making sure your computer is backed up!

    A current backup of your computer will be a lifesaver when (note I didn’t say if) your hard drive fails. Hard drives can run for years with no problems, but sooner or later they all fail.

    I know of at least one Internet entrepreneur who recently had a hard drive crash and lost almost a week of time rebuilding his business data. The irony is that he’s a former computer professional who’s been in the business well over 20 years and should know better.

    We all get complacent. I’m as guilty as the next person, but I’m sufficiently paranoid that I keep searching for good automatic backup methods. I’m investigating various backup methods including online backups and external hard drives.

    Each of these requires software to actually transfer the files to the storage media. Finding the right combination is a challenge, but well worth the effort.

    Hard drives are extremely cheap these days. The excuse that backing up takes too much disk space is no longer valid. For around $100 you can get external hard drives of 320MB or larger. The price per gigabyte of storage continues to drop and available drives have up to 1 terabyte (that’s 1,000 GB!) of capacity for less than $200.

    Software for backups is readily available and fairly inexpensive, as well. Many hard drives come with backup software so there’s no additional cost beyond the cost of the drive.

    Whichever software and media solution you choose, do yourself a huge favor and test it thoroughly before you assume it’s working. Backup your system, then restore the files from the backup, if possible. At least verify that the files on the backup media are valid. There’s nothing quite so depressing as to think you’re backed up only to find that the backup is no good.

You can waste so much time waiting for baggage to be checked in, then waiting for the carousel start up after embarking, and add on top of that all the time and energy you spend looking for your bag and getting it off the carousel.You can now be one of those people who just sail through security, immigration and customs first with out a care in the world.

    4: Leave the children at home. Dont fly with kids unless you absolutely have to. They take so much time and energy. They hate being stuck in a plane for long periods of time and they drive the other passengers insane.

    5: Minimize flights: Get you travel agent to book your tickets so that you have as few actual flights as possible. If you can get there in one flight pay the extra and do it. Not only will you save your self time and energy, you will be safer and you will have a much greater chance of getting to your location on time. The less planes you have to travel on taking off and landing the safer you will be. Also there are so many disruptions to flight times including delays and cancellations and over booking that one flight will always be less stressful.

    6: Leave the kitchen sink at home. Yes I mean that. If you have a habit of taking things that you think you might need, dont. Look at point three again, this way you wont have room for the kitchen sink.
